Description
We are looking for enthusiastic and responsible counselors, ages 16 & up, who have some experience teaching and caring for young children. If you appreciate the connection between children and nature and would like to gain valuable experience in outdoor education, please apply! Preference will be given to qualified candidates with greater and more consistent availability.
Primary Responsibilities include:
Supervising campers at all times during camp hours, leading activities, ensuring safety, and serving as a positive role model.
Daily routines include setting up and cleaning up supplies, activities, and other light housekeeping related to SFD activities around the GBC grounds/building (examples may consist of moving tables and chairs, putting out compost, trash, or recycling, sweeping, washing dishes, etc.)
Understand camp rules and safety guidelines, assist lead educators with implementing them, monitor campers and help identify potential hazards (such as poison ivy, thornbushes, etc.), and know and follow all emergency procedures.
Requirements:
Physical requirements include being able to walk on the trails with a backpack, pull wagons, and/or lift up to 30 pounds.
Communication requirements include being able to communicate with fellow staff about schedule, activities, and concerns about the campers; you must also be able to communicate with campers and work with senior staff to address individual campers' needs.
Candidates must be comfortable outdoors in all-weather conditions with the kids (excluding thunder, lightning, and/or high winds, in which we will take shelter in the building).
CPR certification* (through the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, or a compatible organization). This will be offered in the spring at GBC.
Staff ages 18 and older will be required to have a background check.
Staff ages 18 and older will be required to have mandated reporter training* (will be offered)
If you are hired, all staff will be required to have a copy of the CT state Health Exam form signed by their primary care physician, and if under the age of 18, Immunization records as well (This is the same documentation needed for school).
